    Oil Burner Questions

    So a few weekends ago I got the roof over my foundry and blacksmith section of my shop fixed and I wanna see if I can get an oil burner working, it's only been about 10 to 12 years since I first started it, now I hope to finally finish it and get back to pounding red hot iron and melting and pouring molten metal

    Here's where I'm at, years ago my neighbor gave me the oil burner that once heated his house, it did work when I first got it but life happened and I wasn't ever able to get it together and the oil pump doesn't work now, I've had my big forge finished for quite a while now, so now it's time to get the oil burner working, I plan to use waste motor oil thinned with kerosene if possible, I need to buy a new oil pump, that's where my question is, I have found several just like I originally had on this burner, then I searched for a waste oil burner pump and found a couple that look very similar to what I already have, I have a book that shows what all the number and letters are for on the oil pumps, but I'd like to get someone else to let me know what they think and if it could work
    Below is a picture of my burner and pump, the letters and numbers on my pump are A2VA-7116



    I found an oil pump on ebay just like it, then I found another "waste oil pump" with these letters and numbers on it A2RA-7710
    Here is what the letters and number mean on the pumps
    A - Series, they are both Single Stage
    2 - motor Speed, they are both 3450 RPM
    R - Strainer, The R = 30 x 30 mesh, I haven't been able to find out what the mesh size is for the "V" but I'm working on it
    A - Motor Rotation and Nozzle Location, They are both the same

    The only difference is this
    77 - 54 mm Hub Lip Seal
    10 - Mounting Style and Standard Pumps

    My pump is
    71 -
    16 -

    I can't seem to find what the 7116 means verses the 7710, If they are close I'm sure I can get one to fit the other since I have a machine shop

    Tomorrow I'm going to call a friend of mine who owns a heating and cooling company to see if he knows anything about oil burner pumps
    I'm also going to call Bryant heating and cooling since they service and sell Suntec oil pumps

    Until then if anyone knows anything about them I would greatly appreciate any help you can give me

    Well.. the good news is that pump is only about 70bucks for a new one. I see 3 GPH.... That's a bit high you know right?? Ya need something around 1gph

    Thats typically their highest rating on the pumps flow, the actual consumption/output can be changed by the nozzle up to the max gph of the pump.

    I'm not to worried about GPH since I know I can adjust that other ways, I did find out that I should be able to use the waste oil pump on my burner, that's my main concern. I have plenty of used motor oil to use and I can get more whenever I want it

    I'll just be happy to get back into casting and forging

    I know this is a different direction, but if you have lots of use motor oil, you might be interested in siphon nozzle type burners. I build a very nice burner system using the air pump out of a torpedo type heater and the nozzle from it. Instead of cutting the oil with kerosene, I use a modified coffee urn to preheat and thin the oil.     For the price of the new oil burner pumps and all those other parts, you might be able to pick up a heater off craigslist and that's mostly all you need.
    Use those coffee makers with the spout out the bottom to preheat you oil!

    Just out of curiosity, have you had the pump apart to check the internal filter mesh? I've had the one on my home furnace apart multiple times, every few years the strainer inside the housing with the 4 bolts on it gunks up. It can be cleaned pretty easily with carburetor cleaner.

    My pump got here Friday, I didn't have time to mount it until Sunday night, yesterday I went out and fired it up using kerosene, it worked, now I just need to get used motor oil and mix it with kerosene and get it adjusted, I only let it run for about 10 minutes, most of the smoke is from used motor oil I tried in the past

    I still need to finish my fuel tank, I'm gonna use and old propane tank, I built one years ago and I cleaned it out yesterday, now I just need to find a place to mount it, I might add a heating element to it for the winter, altho I could try a waterbed heater wrapped around it like I did when I used propane, I don't know if that would heat the oil up but I might give it a try since it's out there

    So does anyone mix used motor oil with kerosene, and if you do what ratio do you use? I was gonna try 3 parts kerosene to 1 part oil then go from there, if anyone has a better idea please let me know

    As far as my old pump goes yeah I had it apart, the strainer was clean, it would seize up after being on for about 30 to 40 seconds, I tried polishing the shaft as well as the inside of the pump housing where the shaft went, everything else looked ok, that's why I just bought a new pump, it cost me $65 including shipping

    Hey Ron... In the colder months, I throw about 25% kerosene (jet-A) at my used motor oil. Just helps it flow better when it's cold and I don't have to mess with heating my fuel tank. No pump, I'm gravity feed only doing the siphon thing with a Kwiky burner. You're 3 to one will work, but I would try 50/50 If I were you. More oil, more better... Less money. (I am such a cheapskate) lol
